UNIT ONE - Reading/Writing Workshops & Choice Novels
(5 weeks : Aug 29 - Sept 30)
Essential Question - How does reading help us become more understanding of the world around us?
Novel - Individual choice by students
Writer's Notebook - provided by teacher
In this unit, students should be looking to answer the question "How does reading help us become more understanding of the world around us?" Students will have several choice novels available with varying reading levels. Students will have time in class to read novels and work on small lessons/projects that help them reflect what is in the novel and how it connects to the real world. While doing this reading, students will also be writing in the journals. There will be writing assignments that vary from reflections, to vocab lessons, to grammar activities, etc. At the end of this unit, students will be having discussions in mini-socratic circles where each student will be asked to choose a theme from his/her novel and pose a question to the group. As the final assessment, students will have a choice in what type of project fits best with their novel as well as how they want to present their findings and connection to the novel.
